In a statement released on Thursday afternoon the party said Ndabuka was requested to step down with immediate effect. The IFP said this decision was taken in the collective interest of Amajuba district which oversees Newcastle, Dannhauser Municipalities in northern KZN. "The IFP extends its gratitude to Prince Ndabuko Zulu for his dedicated service and leadership during his tenure. Deputy mayor Thembelihle Mthembu will assume the role of acting mayor until further notice. The party's relevant committees will oversee the process of filling the mayoral vacancy," the statement said.Ugu – The ANC used a Christmas party for elderly people in the Tolomane Mnyayiza region in Port Shepstone to celebrate its by-election victory of Ward 2 in Pietermaritzburg under the uMsunduzi municipality. "He understands that once he turns to alcohol the business will collapse."&nbsp;Hlabisa urged young people to focus on getting skills to help build the country's economy.&nbsp;The Summit looked at youth development and how young people can work with and hold accountable the Government of National Unity. By Zukile Majova&nbsp;Police have created a standoff at Stilfontein mines by blocking illegal miners from bringing up their gold, leaving thousands of families facing a Christmas without money.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Over 1,400 illegal miners have been forced out of abandoned mines by hunger and thirst.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Police are blocking attempts to bring gold to the surface, affecting families who depend on illegal mining money.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It would appear the police's Operation Valumgodi against illicit mining is literally also closing the source of living for many families both in South Africa and neighbouring countries&nbsp;&nbsp;Thousands of families who rely on illegal mining money will have a bleak Christmas this year as police refuse to let miners surface with their gold in Stilfontein, North West.&nbsp;The police's Operation Valumgodi has trapped a large amount of gold underground at shafts 10 and 11. Officers are watching day and night to stop the illegal miners, known as zama zamas, from bringing up their gold to sell on the black market.&nbsp;Police have caught some miners with gold during rescue operations, while others who tried sneaking out at night found officers waiting for them.&nbsp;This standoff is hitting families hard, not just in the local community but also in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and Mozambique. Many people make money by supplying the miners with food, drinks and medicine.&nbsp;These suppliers keep records of what they give the miners, hoping for big payouts monthly or every three months. They often charge the miners more than double the shop price for food.&nbsp;Underground, the miners work for days to buy food from their bosses using gold. By Dylan Bettencourt&nbsp;Former police minister Bheki Cele said the saddest part of the murder-suicide in KZN is a child has lost its parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Former police minister Bheki Cele visited the family of a woman killed by her boyfriend who then took his own life.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">The boyfriend confessed on Facebook that he killed her because she wanted to leave him after getting RAF money.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Former police Minister Bheki Cele has visited the family of Nontobeko Cele whose boyfriend killed her before hanging himself in KwaZulu-Natal.&nbsp;The former cop boss appealed that men need to walk away from relationships that aren't working instead of turning violent.&nbsp;&nbsp;"The question of gender-based violence will have to stay with the men and the men will have to come with the answers," said Cele.&nbsp;The minister was very concerned for the two-year-old child who has now lost both parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;"When somebody took that decision, I don't think he put in the centre the future of the child, that at two years, he has no mother, he has no father," said Cele.&nbsp;“Unfortunately, nobody is there between themselves to explain why such a drastic decision would have been taken.”&nbsp;Sibusiso Lawrence&nbsp;<a href="https://scrolla.africa/man-who-confessed-to-killing-his-ex-girlfriend-found-dead/">shocked the nation when he posted a video on Facebook confessing to killing his girlfriend</a>. His body was later found hanging from a tree on Wednesday.&nbsp;The family says this wasn't Lawrence's first attempt to harm his girlfriend, who was a primary school teacher. They told&nbsp;Newzroom Afrika that he had fooled them into thinking he was a good person when he was actually abusive.&nbsp;Lawrence's father revealed the couple had been traditionally married through lobola, and he had helped with the negotiations.&nbsp;&nbsp;"When they started fighting, he asked me and his mother to go and speak to the wife's family. She ended up dumping him before our very eyes," he said.&nbsp;The father added that his son was usually quiet but had recently opened up about his troubles, including claims that the child wasn't his.&nbsp;In his Facebook video, Lawrence gave chilling details about why he killed his girlfriend.&nbsp;&nbsp;"She gave birth to a child who is not mine and I have taken care of her. She got tired of me and rejected me as she was about to get RAF [Road Accident Fund money] that I helped with. She broke up with me," he said.&nbsp;KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Lawrence had picked up his girlfriend from her home before the murder. By Dylan Bettencourt&nbsp;The government has extended the deadline for owners to register spaza shops while investigating poisoned food that has killed dozens of people, mostly children.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">The government extended the spaza shop registration deadline to February 2025 after many owners struggled to meet the first deadline.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Dangerous rat poison found in some shops has killed 41 people, including 38 children, as police investigate smuggling.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Spaza shop owners have been given another two months to get their registration in order.&nbsp;The first deadline ended on Tuesday. They now have until 28 February 2025 to register their businesses after the government extended the deadline.&nbsp;CoGTA Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa said at a media briefing that many shop owners faced problems trying to register within the first 21 days.&nbsp;"We are aware of some who have encountered obstacles not of their own making, preventing them from complying with the 21-day registration period. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have taken the time to register their businesses," Hlabisa said.&nbsp;Even shops that have registered still need to get trading licences after health inspectors check their premises. Over 1,000 spaza shops have already been shut down for breaking health rules.&nbsp;"If you don't comply with the health regulations the business is closed immediately. Hence 1,041 spaza shops have already been closed," he said.&nbsp;The crackdown comes as police reveal 41 people have died from bad food across South Africa. Police Deputy Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said most victims were children.&nbsp;"We are handling a total of 32 cases to date where 41 persons have died, 38 of whom are children and three are adults. Concerning the recent cases that led to the team, we haven't had any arrests," she said.&nbsp;Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said they found a dangerous rat poison called Terbufos in some shops. They think it's being smuggled in through Durban harbour.&nbsp;"Out of the five manufacturers of this organophosphate called Terbufos, which they have inspected and tested, they concluded that it might be coming from outside the country because it is not similar to the one that is manufactured by the five companies," he said.&nbsp;“There is a lot of concentration and activity [in the Port of Durban] and even intelligence-directed operations against the port where we believe these chemicals are coming through. Government gives spaza shops more time to register

Celani Sikhakhane brings the latest news from Kwa-Zulu Natal.Mtubatuba – Police stopped a minibus taxi carrying 17 illegal foreigners who were trafficked from Mozambique to different parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The taxi was flagged down at a roadblock on the N2 in Mtubatuba in the far north of KZN on Wednesday in an operation championed by Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa of the uMkhanyakude district; he is also the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. Preliminary investigation revealed that the passengers , including two minors, were en route to KwaDukuza, Mandeni and eThekwini. "We were shocked to learn of a minibus bus taxi that had apparently entered SA illegally. We were able to identify a kombi from Mozambique,“ said kaMadlopha-Mthethwa. “Fortunately, we are a big team of law enforcement consisting of police, home affairs officials, transport, and the Department of Social Development,".Richards Bay – Hawks members from Richards Bay’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit working with the King Cetshwayo District Task Team arrested Sipho Shange, 34, Siyabonga Mathaba, 30, Nkululeko Khumalo, 33, and Ayanda Bhengu, 34, for dealing in drugs. The four accused were arrested on Friday night during a road block on the N2 near Mtunzini Toll Plaza. During a stop and search operation, police searched a light motor vehicle with four occupants. Police found a black sling bag containing heroin capsules and cocaine with a street value of about R200,000. The four were placed under arrest and charged for possession of and dealing in drugs. They briefly appeared in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and were remanded in custody. The case was postponed to 27 December.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Durban – eThekwini Metro Police discovered SAPS uniforms believed to be used in criminal activities during a raid conducted in Savannah Park and Welbedacht in Durban. Other items recovered included two 9mm firearms, heroin capsules and stolen property linked to a business robbery in Pinetown. The recovered items and arrested suspects were handed over to Chatsworth SAPS for further investigation and processing. Units involved in the operations include the Durban Metro Police Drug Team, eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team, the Durban Metro Police Suburbs Team, Crime Intelligence and Dew Force Security. By Celani Sikhakhane&nbsp;The Rain Queen of Bolabedu plans to unite different tribes and develop her region but faces opposition from family members who want her brother to rule instead.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">The Rain Queen promises to work with all tribes in her kingdom to bring development through farming and mining.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Some royal family members planned court action after President Ramaphosa recognised her instead of her brother.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The Rain Queen, Modjadji VII, says she wants to bring all tribes together under her rule and boost farming and mining in her kingdom.&nbsp;Her chief adviser, Professor Mathole Motshekga, says the Queen understands that her Bolabedu nation includes different groups.&nbsp;"Queen Modjadji VII understands very well that the Bolabedu consists of different tribes which include the Vhavhenda, the Bapedi and BaTsonga. Her Majesty regards all people regardless of their tribes or ethnic origins as the members of Bolabedu Royal Nation," said Motshekga.&nbsp;The Queen will be crowned in March next year, and Limpopo Premier Poppy Ramathuba has already marked the date in her diary.&nbsp;But some royal family members are unhappy. They plan to go to court after President Cyril Ramaphosa officially recognised Masalanabo Modjadji as Queen last week.&nbsp;The unhappy family members say they should have been asked first. By Celani Sikhakhane&nbsp;The Ingonyama Trust Board will be investigated over missing millions while its relationship with King Misuzulu breaks down.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">King Misuzulu ordered an investigation into R41-million missing from the trust meant to help rural communities.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Trust board members face anger from the King after holding a media briefing without him.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Members of the Ingonyama Trust Board held their first media briefing in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday – without its chairperson, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.&nbsp;The Zulu monarch was nowhere to be seen.&nbsp;The meeting came as the King ordered an investigation into R41-million of missing money that was meant to help rural communities.&nbsp;The King has appointed Ahmed Gana Attorneys Inc. to investigate claims of corruption and misuse of funds.&nbsp;CEO Vincent Vela Mngwengwe said they held the briefing without the king because "he is a busy person".&nbsp;"Not meeting with the media has not been a deliberate neglect or a commitment to secrecy. From when the board took office, it has had to deal with some matters which needed urgent attention," said Mngwengwe.&nbsp;The board's relationship with King Misuzulu has broken down so badly that he has asked the minister of land reform to dissolve it.&nbsp;&nbsp;But board members claim the minister doesn't have this power, saying they only answer to Parliament's portfolio committee.&nbsp;The King has accused board members, especially deputy chair Advocate Linda Zama, of undermining his authority. He claimed Cele had cut him out after he helped her get Road Accident Fund money.&nbsp;Police Minister Senzo Mchunu called the murder "a betrayal of humanity" and urged action on gender violence, mental health and social media abuse.&nbsp;As these attacks make headlines, the Department of Social Development has reopened its Gender-Based Violence Command Centre after switching to a new service provider.&nbsp;The 24-hour helpline offers counselling and support from qualified social workers. It went live on 18 December but currently only takes voice calls on 0800 428 428.&nbsp;The centre will add SMS, Please Call Me, web and WhatsApp services in early 2025. It's also seeking permission to track victims' locations to help them faster.&nbsp;Department spokesperson Lumka Oliphant said they had to restart the service quickly due to rising violence.&nbsp;Despite a 5.8% drop in the murder rate, incidents of violence against women and children in the country have increased during the past quarter. By Anita Dangazele&nbsp;Most spaza shop owners in Nelson Mandela Bay missed the registration deadline with hundreds caught trying to use fake documents to register their businesses.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">More than 1,000 spaza shops in Nelson Mandela Bay failed to register by the deadline with many using fake documents.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Only 2% of shops got approval while hundreds were caught trying to use false papers to register their businesses.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Only a measly fraction of spaza shop owners in Gqeberha bothered to comply with the new regulations to register their businesses before the Tuesday 5pm deadline.&nbsp;As the deadline closed on Tuesday, most spaza shop owners in Nelson Mandela Bay haven't even tried to register their businesses.&nbsp;Even worse, among the 594 owners who bothered to register, almost 338 applications were thrown out for using fake documents.&nbsp;The metro has 1,637 spaza shops, but only 594 owners came forward to get their trading papers, called a certificate of acceptability.&nbsp;Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said: “We have picked up that there are about 338 that do not qualify; we've picked that up because of this multi-sectoral committee that we're working with, your Home Affairs. We have started a process that says all applications must start at Home Affairs for verification, and then it comes back to us [the municipality].&nbsp;&nbsp;“That's where disqualification comes in, and the cases we have picked up we've referred to the SAPS. Hence, you will hear that some have been taken in for questioning," she said.&nbsp;Municipal spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya said only 22% of shop owners had tried to register, with just 2% getting approved.&nbsp;Some local property owners discovered their papers were being used without their knowledge. Nokuzola Luntonti from Kwazakhele has been renting her shop to a Somali national since 2009.&nbsp;"My tenant asked for my documents, and when I gave them to him I thought he wanted to fix the issue with the electricity. I was not aware that spaza shops had to be registered and I did not know he would use my documents for that," she said.&nbsp;On the final registration day, only a few people showed up at the Lilian Diedericks Building in Gqeberha. By Celani SikhakhaneEFF leader Julius Malema convinced Jac Motors to cancel its sponsorship of a car for Amabhinca leader Mchunu, but the car is back.&nbsp;Ngizwe Mchunu, the self-proclaimed president of the Amabhinca nation, has told the EFF that they must forget about ever again touching his sponsorship deal with Jac Motors.Mchunu spoke to&nbsp;Scrolla.Africa on Tuesday after the Chinese company decided to reinstate the sponsorship.&nbsp;The deal had been collapsed by EFF leader Julius Malema after Mchunu told Malema that he must only campaign in Limpopo, and not in KZN.That was viewed by Malema as tribalism, which led him to put pressure on Jac Motors to halt Mchunu’s sponsorship.Mchunu was left without a car but months later the company decided to reinstate the deal by giving Mchunu a 2024 model R600,000 Jac 4x4 permanently, with a log book.Mchunu claims to have strong ancestors and a powerful God that has defeated the EFF and Malema."My ancestors are working day and night. Even in the Bible, King David once said they have not seen the one like Jesus. I am that person and no one will touch me.&nbsp;“The car is permanently mine. All I can say is that Julius Malema must come and apologise to me. We also pay respect to traditional healers for their presence in this gala dinner," said Mkhize.&nbsp;Just a day earlier, she had faced anger for stopping traditional leaders from entering the VIP area at the party's first birthday celebration. The leaders wanted to meet with party bosses.&nbsp;A group called Injeje yabeNguni attacked Mkhize in public, saying she treated the chiefs like prisoners. They referred to her past job as a prison warder at the Escourt Correctional Centre.&nbsp;At the dinner, Jacob Zuma celebrated the party's growth. MK deputy apologises after chiefs blocked at anniversary event

By Anita Dangazele&nbsp;A rise in Eastern Cape initiation deaths has pushed officials to warn parents about illegal schools.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Deaths at initiation schools in the Eastern Cape have jumped from eight to 17, with most deaths happening in illegal schools.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Dehydration, infections and initiates not taking their regular medicine are the main causes of these deaths.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Government has taken a gloves-off attitude and hardline stance towards the continuing incidents of deaths of circumcision initiates.&nbsp;This as the number of young men who have died at initiation schools in the Eastern Cape has more than doubled in just one week, climbing to 17.&nbsp;Parliament sent its team to check what's happening in the province. Cogta Portfolio Committee chairperson Zweli Mkhize wants tough action.&nbsp;"We need full enforcement of the law as far as traditional initiation is concerned, the full co-operation of parents. Where there is transgression, action must be taken, particularly where there is cutting of corners, [and people are] generating money out of it," Mkhize said.&nbsp;Most deaths happened in two areas -- the OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo districts. Many could have been prevented, said Mkhize.&nbsp;"It looks like dehydration is a major cause of death of initiates in the Eastern Cape. The second cause of death is sepsis, an infection that gets into the blood, which again can be prevented.”&nbsp;The third cause of death, he said, involves the acceptability of Western medicine among initiates. Western medicines are not allowed in initiation camps. But he said: “An initiate who has asthma and epilepsy, I [encourage] to take his medication."&nbsp;&nbsp;Some deaths were caused by careless traditional nurses.&nbsp;In one case from Tsolo, an initiate died after his father took him from a legal school. Eastern Cape Cogta MEC Zolile Williams said this strange move led to tragedy.&nbsp;"Unfortunately, the son died in his father's care. That case is being investigated. There is an inquest," he said.&nbsp;Williams warned parents about illegal schools. "It had become very clear in the Eastern Cape that any parents who sent their children to illegal schools [should be aware that] those children would die," he said.&nbsp;"We are worried about the increasing number of deaths. By Celani Sikhakhane&nbsp;The AbaThembu King plans a grand celebration for his son's return from initiation with the event likely to celebrate a historic handover of the throne.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo plans a huge celebration with six cattle to welcome his son back from initiation school.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">The King is expected to hand over the throne to Prince Sinethemba after he graduates from traditional initiation.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The AbaThembu nation is preparing for a big royal party as Prince Sinethemba returns from his month-long traditional initiation into manhood.&nbsp;The celebration at Bumbane Great Palace in Mthatha on Friday, 20 December, will mark the prince's transformation from boyhood to manhood after spending time in the mountains since 23 November.&nbsp;Guests have been asked to wear traditional dress – "isinxibo sakwantu" – for the umgidi ceremony, which will host politicians, business leaders and other royals.&nbsp;A royal family member, who cannot be named, told&nbsp;Scrolla.Africa that representatives from King Sabatha Dalindyebo have already brought gifts to the palace.&nbsp;"As we speak the KSD ANC Sub-Region is here at the palace to meet the King and they brought several gifts. About six cows so far have been prepared to be slaughtered on Friday," the family member said.&nbsp;The celebration could mark a big change for the AbaThembu nation. King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo is expected to announce he will step down and hand the throne to Prince Sinethemba.&nbsp;The King told the&nbsp;Daily Dispatch he doesn't want to stay on the throne until death like Britain's Queen Elizabeth. I’m a parent too, and my two kids don’t always have me at home because of my job,” said Buys.She shared tips to keep children safe, like the ABCs of resuscitation: A for Airway, B for Breathing, C for Circulation, and D for Disability. She said getting help quickly is very important to save lives.Hanna, a medical student at the hospital, warned that choking is a big danger, especially with new toys. “We’ve seen many cases where kids swallow small magnets that adults use as stress toys. These magnets look like the silver balls on cupcakes, so children want to eat them,” she said.She told parents to choose toys carefully and keep small things like magnets and batteries away from kids.The hospital had a festive parade for its young patients. The children played games organised by the Occupational Therapy Department, and a hospital porter dressed up as Santa.&nbsp;Families, kids, and staff took photos with Santa and the Fire Service team. By Celani Sikhakhane&nbsp;Constituency offices are empty with no rent being paid or staff members hired and the party is in debt but MK officials have still not released the IEC’s grant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">MK party leaders in KZN are accused of withholding R56 million in IEC funds meant for constituency offices, leaving them unpaid and unstaffed.</li><li dir="ltr">Allegations of missing funds and leadership inaction have caused internal strife, with debts mounting and frustration reportedly reaching MK President Jacob Zuma.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party leadership at the KZN legislature are embroiled in a R56-million funding crisis.&nbsp;The funds are being given to parties represented in the legislature by the Independent Electoral Commission.&nbsp;It is alleged that Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa – former director general of the KZN government under then premier Dr Sbu Ndebele – and former uMsunduzi deputy mayor Thobani Zuma, now both MK officials and members of the provincial legislature, are being accused of holding funds that are meant for the the party’s constituency offices.Scrolla.Africa has learned that these offices are becoming a white elephant, with no rent being paid or staff members hired.The party funding is given to political parties according to the number of representatives in the legislature. MK received the bulk of funding compared to other political parties in the KZN legislature.&nbsp;Sources told&nbsp;Scrolla.Africa that even the party leader is asking why the funds aren’t being released, because the organisation is in debt of R30-million, incurred ahead of the 29 May general elections.&nbsp;"Thobani Zuma and Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa are frustrating uBaba (Jacob Zuma) a lot. They don't want to release the funding and in some constituency offices that are lucky to have staff members – no one has received a salary.“We really don't know what they want to do with the funding. The painful part is that Thobani Zuma no longer answers MK President Zuma's calls," one source said.Another source claims that there's a fight over the disappearance of R11-million – money believed to have been taken from that R56-million for which no one is being held accountable.&nbsp;Earlier this month, the rumour mill went into overdrive with unconfirmed reports that both Mbanjwa and Thobani had been recalled from the legislature. A media release not bearing the party letterhead rebutted such claims&nbsp;When Thobani Zuma was contacted by&nbsp;Scrolla.Africa he laughed the allegations off."I don't want to laugh, but there are people who are designated to speak to the media. Kindly contact them because I am not allowed to speak," said Zuma.Mbanjwa said that this is just a joke and no one could block Zuma’s phone number as he is a leader."The only person who can explain about the party funding is its commander Willies Mchunu. MK leadership caught up in R56m KZN party funding

By Anita DangazeleThe provincial government is concerned about the increasing number of road accidents.<ul><li dir="ltr">A head-on collision between an SUV and a minibus taxi on the N9 near Graaff-Reinet killed 14 people, prompting investigations into the cause.</li><li dir="ltr">Eastern Cape leaders expressed concern over rising road fatalities, urging safer driving, stronger law enforcement, and targeted checks to prevent accidents.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;Fourteen people died in a horrific crash between an SUV and a minibus taxi on the N9 near Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape early on Monday morning.Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Makhaya Komisa said the accident happened in the early hours.&nbsp;“It is alleged that the Hyundai Creta was travelling from Middelburg to Graaff-Reinet, while the Quantum was headed in the opposite direction towards Middelburg, when they collided head-on,” Komisa said.All six passengers in the Hyundai Creta died at the scene, while eight passengers who were travelling in the Toyota Quantum died in hospital.&nbsp;The minibus taxi was travelling from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape. The cause of the crash is not yet known and is under investigation.Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha said the provincial government was concerned about the increasing number of road accidents.&nbsp;“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of these passengers, and as a province, we are gravely concerned about the rising number of deaths on our roads.&nbsp;“I urge all motorists to be patient with one another and to drive cautiously, especially as traffic volume is expected to increase during this time of year,” he said.Meanwhile, a hit-and-run on the R102 near Fort Jackson and Potsdam in East London on Sunday left two young men, aged 22 and 23, dead.Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said: “The car sped off after the incident, leaving the young men to die.”Kabelo Mogatosi, the DA shadow MEC for Roads and Transport, called on the Eastern Cape government to make high-risk roads safer, especially the N2 near Dutywa, Libode, and Mount Ayliff, as well as the R61 near Mthatha and Mzamba.“To protect lives, the government must ensure a stronger law enforcement presence on these dangerous routes. This will discourage reckless driving and hold rule-breakers accountable. We need targeted roadblocks and sobriety checks.&nbsp;“Too many accidents are caused by drunk drivers. Fourteen dead in Eastern Cape N9 crash

By Celani Sikhakhane&nbsp;KZN Premier Thami Ntuli said work is still needed to reconcile differences between Afrikaners and Zulus after the Battle of Blood River on 16 December 1838.<ul><li dir="ltr">KwaZulu-Natal leaders urged reconciliation between Zulus and Afrikaners during a Day of Reconciliation event, reflecting on the historic 1838 Battle of Blood River.</li><li dir="ltr">While some Afrikaners continue commemorations at Blood River, Premier Thami Ntuli called for unity, acknowledging lingering divisions but celebrating shared identity as South Africans.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Despite signs that people have not yet reconciled completely, but there was also undeniable evidence that the KZN province wants to be one nation, at peace, under a just leadership.&nbsp;KZN Premier said this during a provincial event to mark Reconciliation Day in Eshowe on Monday.He said the government of KwaZulu-Natal is calling for the healing of wounds between the Zulus and the Afrikaners.This is almost nearly 200 years after the battle of Blood River in Nquthu that saw the defeat of King Dingane’s Zulu regiments.Some Afrikaners still choose to commemorate the day on the banks of Blood River in Nquthu every year.They said this is where they made a vow to God that if they managed to defeat the Zulus, they would come each year to pray at a stone that was made a sign of victory.The Battle of Blood River was fought on 16 December 1838 on the banks of the Ncome River, in what is today KwaZulu-Natal, between 464 Voortrekkers led by Andries Pretorius, and an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 Zulu warriors.Estimates of casualties amounted to over 3,000 of King Dingane's soldiers dead, including two Zulu princes competing with Prince Mpande for the Zulu throne. Three Voortrekker commando members were lightly wounded, including Pretorius.The day was generally referred to as King Dingane's Day, although under the National Party government it was officially called The Day of the Vow. But after 1994 President Nelson Mandela renamed it as the Day of Reconciliation.&nbsp;“Today the 16th of December is known as the National Day of Reconciliation to remind us that, although we were divided in this country, we are now one nation.“Although we were pitted against one another on battlefields like this, we now share a common identity as fellow South Africans. We may still be different in many ways and our diverse cultures and heritage should be celebrated. KZN premier calls for age-old wounds to be healed

By Anita DangazeleThe owners of spaza shops are struggling to register their businesses before the deadline due to missing documents and tough requirements.<ul><li dir="ltr">Spaza shop owners face challenges meeting strict government requirements to register their businesses before the 17 December deadline, citing incomplete documents and citizenship issues.</li><li dir="ltr">Critics argue the 21-day deadline is too short, with less than 30% of applications approved in areas like Nelson Mandela Bay due to zoning and permit issues.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;With less than 24 hours to meet the registration deadline, spaza shop owners across the country are racing against time to register their businesses.Many are struggling to meet the government’s requirements as the 21-day deadline ends on Tuesday, 17 December.President Cyril Ramaphosa called for stricter statutory regulations following the deaths of several children who ate unsafe snacks sold by informal traders.&nbsp;The registration aims to help the government gather information and improve health and safety standards.However, many spaza shop owners have failed to register because of incomplete documents or citizenship issues.Speaking in Johannesburg on Sunday, Gauteng Acting Premier Lebogang Maile said some applications were rejected because of missing information. “Some of the issues that came up [include] people who submitted incomplete documents, people fronting for foreign nationals, and people without floor plans for their businesses,” he said.Maile also said 13,000 applications had been submitted at 85 registration centres across Gauteng.In the Eastern Cape, most spaza shops failed to meet the requirements. In Buffalo City, only 100 out of nearly 1,000 applications were approved.&nbsp;Metro spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said most of the rejected applicants were foreign nationals using asylum-seeker IDs, which don’t qualify for business permits.&nbsp;He said the municipality is working with other government departments to find a solution.In Nelson Mandela Bay, out of 1,627 spaza shops identified, only 361 applied for registration, and fewer than 30 were approved.To register, shop owners must meet many conditions, such as zoning rules, pest control, waste removal, food and fire safety, and having a business licence.Speaking at the SA Spaza Investment &amp; Trade Expo on Saturday, SA Spaza president Bheki Twala said the 21-day deadline was too short.&nbsp;“It’s not just about a trade permit. You need documents like rezoning papers, SARS registration, a bank account, and a title deed. By Doreen Mokgolo&nbsp;After years of frustration with the ANC, the South African Communist Party announces plans to contest the 2026 local elections.&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">SACP leader Solly Mapaila says they will contest the 2026 local elections after years of being ignored by the ANC.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">The party remains in alliance with the ANC but wants changes in how they work together.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A special Congress of The South African Communist Party (SACP) has endorsed the party’s latest decision to contest elections and square off against fellow alliance ANC candidates in the forthcoming 2026 municipal polls&nbsp;&nbsp;However, the paty says it's not leaving its ANC alliance.&nbsp;&nbsp;SACP General Secretary Solly Mapaila told delegates: "The decision to contest the elections has been taken by the Congress and we are ready to contest.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Speaking in Boksburg on Thursday, Mapaila said the ANC has ignored their calls to change how the alliance works.&nbsp;"Deep down in my heart I am bleeding because the weaknesses of leadership have led to this situation, arrogance of political power, factionalism and corruption. There are instances when deserving SACP leaders are overlooked during deployment mainly due to their affiliation," says Mapaila.&nbsp;He says the SACP has lost respect because people see them as weak. By Scrolla Reporter&nbsp;A child is dead and three others are wounded after gunmen opened fire in a Khayelitsha barbershop.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">A 12-year-old boy died and three other children were wounded in a Khayelitsha barbershop shooting.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li dir="ltr">Residents say the shooting may be linked to protection fee demands from local gangs.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The seemingly unabating extortion fee racket gang warfare is raising hair with innocent kids now getting hurt in the crossfire.&nbsp;On Wednesday, a young boy's trip to the barbershop ended in death while three others sustained gunshot wounds when gunmen opened fire in Khayelitsha&nbsp; Cape Town.&nbsp;The 12-year-old died at the scene while three other boys, aged between nine and 13, were rushed to hospital after the shooting at a barbershop in Bukwayo Street.&nbsp;This is the second barbershop shooting targeting children in Khayelitsha in recent months.&nbsp;"This is the second incident where kids were shot and murdered inside a barbershop in Khayelitsha. A few months back, a similar thing happened in another section. I am angry at whoever is doing this because the kids are innocent, and all they needed was a haircut to look good for the Monday holiday," a resident tells&nbsp;Scrolla.Africa.&nbsp;Local people say the shooting might be linked to protection fees demanded from shop owners.&nbsp;Luyolo Gada, 50, says he won't let his children go to barbershops anymore.&nbsp;"In the last incident, kids died. I don't understand why the businesses don't pay this protection fee because by refusing they are putting the customers' lives at risk. I understand that it is painful to give someone money, especially someone who didn't work for it, but for the sake of the customers, I think they should pay," says Gada.&nbsp;Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Malcolm Pojie says three men walked into the shop and started shooting.&nbsp;"Preliminary information reveals that three unknown suspects entered the shop and opened gunfire on the boys, leaving one dead and three wounded, after which they fled on foot," says Pojie.&nbsp;No arrests have been made.
